Non-stop Rain Room at Sharjah Art Foundation

Walk through the rain without getting wet in Sharjah

Rain Room is a place where you can see the rain, feel the rain but you won’t get wet. Located in the Sharjah Art Foundation, Rain Room is a permanent art installation where motion sensors on the ceiling prevent the water droplets from falling on you, clearing a sort of path, roughly six foot in radius.

The Rain Room is an unusual and evocative experience for visitors who will enjoy the sound and nearby feel of being in the rain without getting wet.

When visitors enter the room, they are directed to navigate intuitively and carefully through the dark underground space in order to protect themselves from the downpour. As the visitors walk through the room, which uses 1,200 liters of self-cleaning, recycled water, their movements trigger motion sensors that pauses the rainfall when detecting movement.

Founded in 2005, Random International is a London-based collaborative studio for experimental and digital practice within contemporary art. Their work, which includes sculpture, performance and large-scale architectural installations, reflects the relationship between man and machine and centres on audience interaction.

Sharjah Art Foundation is an advocate, catalyst and producer of contemporary art. Through the Sharjah Biennial, the annual March Meeting, year-round exhibitions, education and community outreach programmes, grants, residencies, commissions and publications, the foundation encourages a shared understanding of the transformational role of art.

The Rain Room building in Sharjah has been designed by Sharjah Art Foundation and the UAE-based SpaceContinuum Design Studio in collaboration with Shape Architecture Practice + Research, Sharjah.

The tickets for Rain Room are sold online and at the venue. Timings are Saturday-Thursday, 9 am-9 pm and Friday, 4 pm-11 pm.

The emirate of Sharjah is well-known for its rich, cultural heritage – an identity that has been recognized a number of times as shown by the winning of the Cultural Capital of the Arab World 1998 and Islamic Culture Capital 2014 awards. It is a vibrant city with an exciting food and arts scene, a heritage area that is the largest restoration project in the region along with various commercial centres and over 22 museums.

The Brains behind Cocoon Maldives

Unravelling Cocoon: meet the creative minds behind the first design hotel in the Maldives. Daniele Lago, Simona Fabini, Tomaso Schiaffino and Gian Luca Innocenzi, together with Vito Di Bari, are among the notable designers involved in the formation and establishment of Cocoon, the first design hotel in the Maldives.

Cocoon Maldives is influentially a collaborative effort between Alessandro Azzola,Managing Director of Cocoon Maldives and Daniele Lago, CEO and Chief Designer of leading Italian design company Lago.

A creative, inventive, and innovative leader, Daniele Lago propelled the success of the Lago brand since its launch. Today, the brand is highly established and recognized worldwide, especially in the furniture sector. The brand even has a strong social media presence, with a following of as large as one and a half million.

Cocoon’s alliance with a design company as niche and creditable as Lago is auspicious. Given the company’s area of expertise, Lago meets the image of Cocoon as a brand of lightness, hospitality, and empathy with the surrounding environment.

Every piece of furniture is specifically selected to align with the company’s concept; suspended beds, washbasins with contemporary draining system, authentic sicilian hand-painted ceramic tables and swings are part of them.

Complimenting the state-of-art furnishing is light installation by Tomaso Schiaffino,Art Director of Bellaria Design. Specialising in ‘lighted furniture and unique design products’, Bellaria Design’s ‘Tree of Light’, which was featured in the Oscar-winning movie ‘The Great Beauty’, is a top-rated innovation of Cocoon.

Exclusively designed and made in Italy, the ‘Tree of Light’ has received tremendous attention. Inspired by trees, these innovative light installations are particularly popular amongst guests for Instagram worthy shots.

Responsible for the development of Cocoon from its earliest stages right through to completion is Simona Fabini, chief Architect of Cocoon. With 20 years of experience in residential and tourism projects, both in Italy and abroad, Fabini steered the development of Cocoon, transforming it into the hotel, as we know it today. Fabini is the talent responsible for integrating and harmonizing the various elements which constitute Cocoon en masse. Another remarkable work of Fabini is the Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa, an ultra-luxurious 5-star property located in the “spice island”.

Another unique feature at Cocoon is Gian Luca Innocenzi and Vito Di Bari ‘Tree of Wellbeing’ by MyEquilibra. Integrating outdoor workout, technology, art and community, ‘Tree of Wellbeing’ is the world’s first outdoor fitness system based on instinctive body movements. Inspired by nature, ‘Tree of Wellbeing’ is shaped to emulate an elegant artwork, with fine details, style and technological sophistication, apt for Cocoon.

Being the first to adopt this innovation, Cocoon is the first hotel in Maldives with a fully equipped outdoor gym.

Who will be the next creative inspiring and expressing himself in Cocoon? To quote Daniele Lago: “never stop designing spaces”.

ALADDIN First Regional Screening in Amman

Over 1,000 people watched the thrilling and vibrant live-action remake of Disney’s 1992 animated film, “Aladdin”, in a unique regional advance screening organized by the Royal Film Commission-Jordan (RFC) in Amman recently.

The exciting tale of the charming boy from the streets, Aladdin, the courageous and determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future was introduced by stars of the movie: Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, and the movie’s Director Guy Ritchie. The cast visited the Jordanian capital on the fourth leg of their Magic Carpet World Tour, following stops in Paris, London and Berlin.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Chairman of the Royal Film Commission, said: “It’s a great pleasure to have welcomed everyone to this event and we are immensely proud as the Royal Film Commission and Jordan to have been part of this wonderful Disney production. After all, the story “Aladdin” comes from this region and therefore we are very grateful that the cast and crew have come back to present the film in Amman.”

Will Smith told journalists at a news conference, moderated by Raya Abirached, at the RFC: “It was important for Guy and myself to tell a story that would be a “love letter” to the region. I was happy to play the role of the genie; the genie being the definition of unconditional love, reflecting what I want to be in life: give gifts and make sure they are not misused. For “Aladdin”, every talent I had cultivated over thirty years had to be used for this film. This was one of the best experiences of my professional career.”

The main advance Gala Screening event took place at Abdali’s state of the art Prime Cinemas in the center of Amman after Iftar, with celebrities greeted by fans on a purple carpet, inspired by the movie Aladdin. Proceeds of the ticket sales for the Gala Screening event are being given to the King Hussein Cancer Center.

Earlier in the day, a private screening of the movie took place, for children from the King Hussein Cancer Center. The young outpatients were surprised at the end of the screening by a visit at the movie theatre by HRH Crown Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah, the director and cast.

“Aladdin” releases in cinemas on 24th May in India. The live-action “Aladdin” is a more modern and authentic retelling of a Disney classic and draws inspiration both from the 1992 animated classic as well as One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern stories drawn from folklore and literature.

The movie was partly filmed in Jordan in November of 2017, amid the beautiful landscapes of Wadi Rum and Wadi Disi, with around 150 Jordanian crew and extras working on the production.

Speaking at the news conference, director Guy Ritchie, who was key in the decision to film “Aladdin” in Jordan, said he is familiar with the topography and geography of the Kingdom. So it was a natural choice to shoot here, but the question was about services, “so all stars aligned that there was really no other choice than Jordan.”

A choice made obvious, as Mary Nazzal-Bataineh Board member at the RFC underlined, thanks to the diversity of the country, the skilled crew, the high quality services and the comprehensive infrastructure, in addition to its incentive package being now taken further. She added: “not only have we been successful in positioning Jordan as the place for film, but we have been also instrumental in achieving a positive social impact on our community.”

“Aladdin” is the most diversely cast Disney movie ever, with the majority of the main cast being from the greater Middle Eastern region. Mena Massoud, who plays the main character of Aladdin, the “street rat” turned Prince, and who is of Egyptian descent, told journalists: “With Aladdin and Will Smith, a dream came true. I hope we will see more and more stories from Egypt and the Middle East (on screen).”

Naomi Scott who is of a mixed Indian-British heritage that allowed her to identify with her character, Princess Jasmine, commented on her character saying: “I felt empowered by the role of Jasmine, who represents a much more modern, strong and ambitious personality in this movie than in the initial one.”

The event was made possible in large part thanks to the support of the Arab Jordan Investment Bank and the Jordan Tourism Board, which works in close cooperation with the RFC to help promote Jordan as a film location.

The RFC was established in 2003 by HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein to support local film makers and help establish a film industry. In addition to screenings and regular workshops offered at all levels of storytelling, filming and production, throughout the kingdom, the RFC works to attract and help support regional and international films use Jordan as a location.

In the past ten years, an estimated 95,000 job opportunities have been offered directly and indirectly linked to films being shot in Jordan.
